Ten Hours of Tedium

As you are reading this (I know, I scheduled it! Aren't I a clever little monkey?) I will probably be many thousands of feet up in the air - assuming my flight hasn't been delayed! I have 10 hours of flying time to kill, as well as many hours stuck in Manchester Airport (although many an hour can be killed in Duty Free!) plus lots and lots of beachtime. Considering that I managed to finish 5 books on my last holiday to Greece for week (one of which was just on the plane!) I thought it was high time I invested in a Kindle.

I'm not going to do a Kindle review here - I like books, lets be honest. I like the smell of books, I like the feel of the pages, those ones with the supersoft covers, the smell of new school text books - I have a gorgeous set of Twilight books, plain white covers with blood red pages - I love books! What I don't like about books is that they blumming well weigh my case down, which means less shoes for Jenni!! So as much as my Kindle won't replace my books, it comes in handy for holidays - I'm not sure my beautiful Twilight books would survive the pool (No I haven't read them yet, or Fifty Shades of Grey, I'm catching up, so sue me!)

I thought I would share with you, what I have downloaded for this trip (there's a lot) and what I may be reading right now. I had to download in advance as I don't have a 3G Kindle, and it would probably cost a fortune on holiday if I did! If you have read any of them, please comment below and tell me what you think and quite frankly whether to bother (although I appreciate it may be too late to save me!)
Percy Jackson

I'd never even heard of Percy Jackson (clearly I live under a rock!) until I saw the Lightening Thief film on Sky (other digital players are available). I've read the first one - I downloaded the sample to see if I would like it and ended up reading the whole thing in a couple of hours! Ooops! I'm looking forward to reading the rest. I love Greek Mythology, and know more about than even I realised, when I was filling my other half in at the weekend when he was watching Clash of the Titans (I am notorious for being a wealth of generally useless, but interesting, information!)

Call the Midwife

Again the reason for me downloading this series is after seeing the television series. I though Miranda Hart was fantastic in the series as Chummy, and I loved Trixie Franklin's 1940s style with her blonde short waves and bright red lipstick. I can only read so much of these types of books at time as the often remind me of work, so I end to dip in and out of them, but a colleague told me that they are quite good, and shouldn't remind me of work too much. (Not really what you want on holiday)

Chick Lit

I've read all the books by Belinda Jones after I picked up about 5 all in one go in a charity shop. I tend to collect books in series and keep them, so I'll end up buying it in paperback too when I find it cheap. They are the perfect holiday read, not too complicated and plenty of sun and romance. I've already read the one that's based in Cuba unfortunately, so I'll be dreaming of California this time! Next holiday maybe?
Croissants and Jam is a bit random. I think I found it via '100 Kindle books under £2.99'. The blurb sounded good and it had good reviews. The sample made me laugh and it was cheap so I bought it - it so easy to do that on a Kindle its dangerous!
Me before You :- My manager (who at times I find difficult to get along with) recommended this to me, as she had read it on backpacking holiday around Vietnam. I'd never heard of it but it literally has 100% 5 star reviews on Amazon. Again I got the sample, and ended up buying the full version and reading a bit of that (until midnight!) before managing to stop myself. I did curse my manager the next day much to her amusement.

Murder

I'm a bit odd, I love a good murder mystery/whodunnit. I blame my mum for this, she has an unhealthy obsession with murder mysteries! I don't like to just take murder mysteries on holiday as I don't want to get a chill in 30 degree heat, but I need to mix my selection up a bit - I'm very much a "what I fancy" rather than reading what I bought next.
I've read (and own) all the Kathy Reichs books, this is the next in the set. They are nothing like the series 'Bones' on TV, and I actually like the character of Temperance Brennan better in the books, she's a lot more normal and a lot less odd. In fact none of the other characters appear. Once you get your head around that you'll do fine.
The Simon Brett novel was an accidental purchase (see I told you it was dangerous!) as I clicked the 'Buy now' button, thinking it would take me to the Kindle store - it didn't - it bought it now. I've read some of these but not all of them. This is one of my Mum's collections rather than mine.
Again the 11th Hour and Backlash are the next in the series of the Women's Murder Club and the Anna Travis/DS Langton collections (you may have seen some of these on ITV if you live in the UK). These, like the Kathy Reichs, will also get bought in paperback when they are supercheap in Tesco or similar.

I don't think I will read all of these, but I'm reckoning on at least 8-10 of them will be done, depending on how long each one takes. If they are anything like the first book, the rest of the Percy Jackson's will be finished before I even arrive!

Have you read of of these books? What do you think of my holiday selection?

  1. I also love murder mystery type books, and crime thrillers - my favourite author at the moment is Simon Kernick, he writes some fantastic fast-paced thrillers! I'm definitely a book fiend rather than a Kindle girl, but I can definitely see how it's useful for long flights and holidays! Hope you're having a brilliant time away :) x
