Frugal Fashion

In this tight economic climate everyone is always on the look out for a fashion bargain. I'm not much of a web shopper but I do have some thrifty tips for any debt-ed divas out there!

Pucci for Pennies

If your a bit of a designer dolly bird and just can't be without your Gucci, Oscar De La Renta, or Herve Leger, but could most definitely be without the designer price tag - then renting could be the way forward. Girl Meets Dress allows you to rent dresses for £29 for two nights with emergency next day delivery. There are also many websites offering designer handbags and shoes to rent. The bonus of sites like this is you get the thrill of having something new without the guilt of the price tag and you get to stay on trend all the time!

Charity Shop Chic

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you will already be more than well aware that I love a good old charity shop rummage! However, if you like the idea of charity shopping, but couldn't bare it if - god forbid - someone actually saw you in one! But fear ye not, for Oxfam, the clever things, have set up an only charity shop! Honestly! Oxfam Online allows you all the good karma of buying second hand without having to give up your well deserved Saturday-morning lie in! Double bonus.

Swapping
If your strapped for cash you may have read loads of 'fashion for less' articles in magazines. Many of these articles suggest holding a 'swapping-party' with your friends. This is all well and good - if you and your friends are all the same size!!! However, if like me, you like a bit of diversity and variety in your friendship group, but would still like to do some swapping, there are now a number of websites out there that allow you to do this online, Big Wardrobe is one such site - you can quickly sign up via your facebook account and get swapping straight away!

Sales
As much as I love a good rummage, and a bargain, I absolutely HATE sales! Everything looks like a unloved jumble sale, everything is on the floor, getting trod on, and if you eventually do find something, you can guarantee you can't find it in your size! The way to avoid all this is by shopping the sales online. For the famous Next sale, they have offered people time slots in order to shop their sale stock. Many other high street stores such as New Look, and River Island offer sale items online. A lot less hassle, more choice and often, a better size selection!

Bargain Sites
Finally, there are a number of sites out there, that are purely there for bargains!
  • Glamorous UK are become more and more well known, for their great 'dupes' gorgeous dresses, and unique prints. For more on Glamorous UK, see my 'Current Crush' from last week.
  • Fashion Vouchers offers voucher codes for loads of online clothing stores - and I don't mean stores you've never heard of - vouchers for sites such as Boohoo.com, Ted Baker, and Debenhams, to name a few, are vouchers currently running.
  • While I'm on the subject Boohoo.com is excellent for providing current trends at rock bottom prices. The great thing about Boohoo is that if there is a trend you want to try but aren't too sure about, their prices are so cheap its doesn't matter so much if you don't wear it that often, as usually happens with some of those high fashion trends.
  • There was no way I couldn't do a post on money saving fashion tips without including Ebay. If your willing to sit and trawl through the 1000s and 1000s of pages, your guaranteed to find a gem! For double the fashion bargains, sites like Goofbay and Fatfingers trawl for mis-spelled items on Ebay, which means less people will be bidding and watching, meaning you get more for less!

Norma Jeane Mortenson

Or more commonly known as Marilyn Monroe. On the 50th Anniversary of the death of one of the world's most iconic women, what better way to celebrate her life than talking about what made her so special.
Marilyn Monroe grew up spending most of her childhood in foster homes before beginning a career as a model. She is a natural brunette but dyed her hair blonde in order to get work, when she was told they were looking for someone with lighter hair. It would go on to become her trademark look that would be copied for generations to come! The name Marilyn Monroe was put together by an executive at 20th Century Fox, as he didn't like the name Norma Jeane.

Marilyn's life was not without scandal, and soon after her breakthrough, nude photographs of her were released that she had had done in order to pay her rent. But this savvy young actress didn't hide away in shame or deny the rumours as her modern day counterparts might, she stood up and admitted the pictures were of her, and were taken at a time when she did what ever she could to get by.
Marilyn starred in a number of films during her career, some of her more well know ones being The Seven Year Itch (the one with the famous 'skirt-blowing' scene), Some Like it Hot and How to Marry a Millionaire. She would go on to marry the baseball player, Joe DiMaggio, (although this was number 2 of three marriages) and firmly began stamping her name in the history books.

Marilyn also famous sung 'Happy Birthday' to President Kennedy, proving not only her prowess as an actress but as a sexy, sultry singer too.
On 5th August 1962, an LAPD officer received a call stating that Marilyn had been found dead at her home. The cause of death was recorded as "acute barbiturate poisoning", resulting from a "probable suicide". Many theories, including murder, circulated about the circumstances of her death and the timeline after the body was found. Some conspiracy theories involved John and Robert Kennedy, while other theories suggested CIA or Mafia conspiracy. She was 36 years old.

Yet despite her difficult childhood, and the controvesy that often surrounded her, her face remains as recognisable as the men and women gracing the big screens today. Her legacy is the style and grace and beauty that she possessed throughout her life. One of her most famous assest is her figure. A figure identifed by its womanly curves, shaply bottom and ample busom. So much so, that in the current market of super skinny models, many women, and even more men, would much prefer a Munro to a Moss!

Goodbye Norma Jeane
